# Authorization errors in mutations are refined

API calls made to the Admin and Storefront API are denied access if the API client does not have the required [access scopes](https://shopify.dev/api/usage/access-scopes) or the user does not have the required permissions. From 2022-01, when access is denied, the required permissions is returned as part of the error message. An error code is also returned.
