# Private app permissions disabled by default

Starting in the next few weeks, private app permissions will be set to **Off** by default in all non-Plus stores. This ensures that merchants opt in to all private apps and understand the permissions they’re giving to developers. All current private apps will continue to function, but cannot be modified until merchants [re-enable private apps in the Shopify admin](https://help.shopify.com/manual/apps/private-apps#enable-private-app-development-from-the-shopify-admin).

If you are looking for an alternative to private apps when building bespoke apps for merchants, consider using [custom apps](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/apps/app-types#custom-apps).
