Updated Shopify Theme Store Requirements and Submission Process – Effective May 15, 2025
Starting May 15, 2025, all Shopify themes must meet the updated Theme Store requirements for new submissions and updates.
Key changes include:
- Theme Zip File Structure: New /listings folder is now required in theme zip files.
- Preset Naming Requirements: Theme name requirements now apply to each preset.
- Industry Categories + Tagging: Each theme preset can be tagged with a maximum of two industries. There are now 20 industry categories to choose from.
- Catalog Size Categories + Tagging: Each theme preset must be tagged with one catalog size. Four catalog size categories are now available.
- Demo Store Requirements:
- Each demo store must match the primary industry and catalog size the preset is tagged with.
- The install store must match the expectations set by the demo store.
- Listing Page Structure: The submission form is updated to support individual listing pages for every preset.
- Simplified UX & Design Requirements: Simpler, more explicit, and easier for you to follow.
These updates are part of a broader redesign of the Shopify Theme Store, set to launch in July 2025. This redesign aims to enhance theme discovery for merchants and streamline their setup process, while providing developers with better marketing opportunities.
IMPORTANT – Next Steps for Developers: To keep your themes listed after the redesign launches in July, please update and resubmit your theme files by June 22. Updated themes and listing pages will not be published until the new Theme Store goes live in July.
Note: Expect potential delays for new theme submissions and updates during the migration period from May 15 to July 1, 2025.
