Visibility in the Shopify App Store

Listing on the Shopify App Store is the easiest way to promote your app to Shopify merchants, but how you market your app is up to you. This page explains the different levels of visibility your app can have on the Shopify App Store.

Public apps and App Store visibility

The Shopify App Store is only open to public apps. App listings and visibility don’t apply to other app types.

Starting December 5, 2019, all public apps need to create an app listing and go through Shopify’s review process. This process is now the same for all public apps, regardless of whether you want to promote your app in the Shopify App Store.

Every approved public app has an app listing on the Shopify App Store, but you can choose whether to make it listed (which is the default option) or unlisted. You can change your app’s visibility at any time.

Listed apps

Being listed means your app is fully visible in the Shopify App Store:

  • It has a listing page with a Shopify App Store URL
  • Merchants can install it from that listing page
  • Its listing shows up in relevant category pages
  • Its listing is indexed in App Store search results
  • Its listing is visible to other search engines

By default, all approved public apps are listed.

Unlisted apps

If you don’t want your app to be listed in the Shopify App Store, you can choose to make it unlisted.

Being unlisted means your app has limited visibility in the Shopify App Store:

  • It has a listing page with a Shopify App Store URL
  • Merchants can install it from that listing page
  • Its listing does not show up in relevant category pages
  • Its listing is not indexed in App Store search results
  • Its listing is not visible to other search engines

How to change your app’s listing status

You can change your public app’s visibility at any time. To change its status:

  1. Log in to your Partner Dashboard.
  2. Click Apps.
  3. Click the name of the app whose listing status you want to change.
  4. Click App listings.
  5. Click the More actions dropdown, then select App visibility.
  6. A dialog labeled “Manage app visibility” will appear. Select either “Listed” or “Unlisted”.
  7. Click Save.
