Verify a domain with third-party services

Third-party services like Pinterest and Google Webmaster require you to verify your domain. This makes sure that you are the correct owner of your Shopify store before they provide their services to you.

To verify your domain, you need to disable password protection for your online store. If you aren't ready to launch your store, you can disable password protection and then enable it again after verifying your domain.

To verify your domain:

  1. On the third-party site, choose to verify your site using a meta tag verification method. For example, for Google Webmasters, you'd click the HTML tag option button on the Alternate methods tab.

  2. Highlight the full meta tag on the third-party site and copy it to your clipboard with cmd + c on a Mac or ctrl + c on a PC. Make sure you select everything, including the < and >. For example:

    <meta name="google-site-verification" content="IV7BPLESttSpBdxSWN1s4zlr4HIcuHkGQYmE3wLG59w" />
4. In the **Layout** section, click `theme.liquid` to open the file in the online code editor. 5. Paste the meta tag that you copied on a blank line directly below the opening `` tag: ![The meta tag pasted below the opening HTML head tag](/manual/customize/third-party-verification/paste-third-party-verification-tag.png) 6. Click **Save**. 7. Complete the verification steps on the third-party site (such as [Pinterest](http://pinterest.com/) or [Google Webmasters](https://www.google.com/webmasters)). > Note: > Once your site is verified with Google you will be able to [submit a sitemap](/manual/promoting-marketing/seo/find-site-map), which helps your store appear in search engine results.
