POS UI extensions now support reactive storage access

The new shopify.storage.current API lets POS UI extension developers respond automatically when stored values change across extension targets on the same POS device. It’s now available in API version 2026-10. No changes are required for existing extensions.

What changed

shopify.storage.current exposes each storage key as a read-only reactive signal. You can read its current value or subscribe to changes made by other targets of the same extension on the same POS device. Writes and removals still use the existing Storage API methods.

For example, a background target can fetch and store a customer’s loyalty points, and a smart grid tile can react to those changes automatically. This keeps the displayed balance up to date without repeated storage reads or custom polling logic.

Stored values load asynchronously, so a signal’s value is initially undefined until its key finishes loading. Make sure you handle this initial state as well as missing keys.

Who’s affected

This addition is available to POS UI extensions that use API version 2026-10 or later. Extensions that use earlier API versions can’t use shopify.storage.current.

What to do

You don’t need to take action. Existing Storage API methods continue to work as before.

To adopt reactive storage, update your extension to use API version 2026-10 or later and read or subscribe to the keys your extension needs through shopify.storage.current.
