Revenue share for Shopify Theme Store developers

Theme developers can earn revenue by selling their themes to merchants on the Shopify Theme Store, where there are no fees for submitting themes for listing. However, total theme revenues are subject to a 15% revenue share. This revenue share applies to all themes listed on the Shopify Theme Store.

Other income, such as from the Shopify App Store or referrals, isn't included in revenue share calculation for the Shopify Theme Store. Learn more about app revenue share.

Tip

Revenue share is calculated based on gross sales, not net sales.

If you have the View financials permission, then you can see theme earnings in your organization settings: open a payout from Payouts, and then click the Themes tab.

You can also see what one store has earned from your themes, if your organization can access the store in the Dev Dashboard's Stores. Stores lists the stores that your organization owns, has transferred to a client, or collaborates on. It doesn't list a store only because it bought your theme or installed one of your apps. On the store's page, the Earnings card shows Total theme earnings.

All billing is subject to a 2.9% processing fee and applicable sales tax. As of August 1, 2021, fees and taxes are charged separately.

Earnings from sales to merchants in some countries or regions are subject to an additional Regulatory Operating Fee.

There are several ways to review your earnings and fees:

When a merchant buys your theme, you can get the store owner email of the shop that bought it. You can use the email to support the merchant, for example, to follow up on a support request or to let them know about a theme update.

You can get store owner emails in the following ways:

  • In the Partner Dashboard, click Export all payment history. Shopify emails you a CSV file that includes the store owner email for each sale.
  • Query the shopEmail field on the ThemeSale transaction in the Partner API. The field is available in the unstable version of the Partner API.

The following query returns your 50 most recent theme sales with the store owner email of each shop:

Keep the following in mind when you use the shopEmail field:

  • Your Partner API client needs both the View financials and Manage themes permissions. Learn how to create a Partner API client.
  • The field returns the store owner's current email, not the email at the time of purchase.
  • The field returns null when the email isn't available, for example, after the shop's data has been purged.
  • Refunds and other adjustments to a theme sale, which are returned as ThemeSaleAdjustment transactions, don't include the store owner email.
Caution

Store owner emails are merchant data. Use them only as permitted by the Partner Program Agreement. Only send marketing emails to merchants who have your theme installed or who have opted in to your marketing communications. Learn more about prohibited actions on the Shopify Theme Store.
